Key Points

Consumer technology startup Nothing Phone on Tuesday launched its smartphone (3a) to the market.

This suggests that Pei is trying to make a similar high-profile appeal with Nothing. Ahead of the launch of the phone, Nothing posted a video on social media showing a humanoid robot, built by Norwegian startup 1X, unboxing a phone while showing photos of the device.

Nothing Phone

‘Sea of smartphone sameness’

Nothing’s company Ben Wood, principal analyst at market research firm CCS Insight, praised Nothing for “trying to differentiate itself” by tackling “a sea of smartphone uniformity.”

“To stand out in the clothing world, you need to differentiate yourself from your competitors. If you want to sell phones, you need to have something that people are looking for.”

This Nothing phone (3a) has a triple camera setup at the back. It includes a 50-megapixel main lens with optical image stabilization to protect one’s phone from shakes and blur, a 50-megapixel telephoto lens for better zooming, and an 8-megapixel ultrawide lens from Japanese tech giant Sony.

The Nothing Phone (3a) device comes with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 processor for smartphones. This is different from the MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro chipset, which Nothing used in its (2a) phone last year.

How well will it sell?

Apart from the great design and impressive camera features, there is not much else in the phone (3a) that sets it apart from other phones. This phone is just like the iPhone; it has all the features that the iPhone has, which you would expect from many other handsets available in the market right now.

In terms of unit sales expectations for selling enough phones at once, Wood said nothing has the new customer base it needs to sell millions of phones like some of its bigger rivals, such as Apple and Samsung. And that sales of “hundreds of thousands of units” for its latest product would be considered a success.

“Nothing has any bawashta in that they run a good, lean organization, and they have to do that to run a viable business,” Wood said. Nothing says it has sold more than 7 million phones to date—along with its line of accessories, including wireless earbuds—with cumulative revenue exceeding $1 billion by 2024.

People say that this day will have to reduce its price. It has spread all over India. And the Nothing people say that its sales have increased a lot in India. Nothing has achieved a growth of 557% year-on-year in 2024.
